Hawthorn is a thorny shrub or tree with stems and trunks that consist of hardwood and gray bark, often having tri-lobed leaves and white flowers that are similar to other genera in the Rose family. It bears bright red berries that can be picked fully ripe in autumn before the first frost.
Hawthorn leaf, flowers, and berries have been praised over the centuries for their heart-elevating properties. Hawthorn is believed to uplift and strengthen both the physical and emotional heart and supports healthy cardiovascular function. The astringent properties of the berries and flowers have given them use in the treatment of sore throats and infections and are also used for kidney inflammation. The flavorful red berries have been used in candies, jams, jellies, wines, and cordials and make a lovely overnight-infused tea. Hawthorn is the tree of magical enchantment and is lovingly known in Ireland as the faerie tree. It is strongly associated with Beltaine, the ancient festival celebrating the arrival of springtime. It is believed to be extremely bad luck to cut one down or remove branches as fairies live under the Hawthorn as its guardians. It was treated with great respect and care to not disturb the little folk. This belief has survived into modern times.
