Stinging Nettle is one of the first plants to emerge in the forest each spring and has been used for thousands of years. It is a common plant found in moist, shady areas all across Europe, North America, and Asia. Nettle is a beautiful shade of green and grows up to 4 feet tall in the summer and dies back in the winter. In the spring, Nettle grows wild and abundant and is a very nutritious leafy green high in vitamins, protein and minerals, specifically calcium and protein. Nettle has a unique ability to fight pain with its sting, called Urtication, and is invaluable in treating rheumatism, sciatica, and arthritis. Nettle is best absorbed when drunk as a fresh plant, overnight tea infusion. As my dear herb teacher, Tonja Reichley always says, “When in doubt, use Nettle!”
