Spearmint, a hardy perennial plant, is native to Europe and Asia. It can grow up to 40 inches in height and has a wide-spreading underground rhizome. It is characterized by oblong or lance-shaped serrated leaves and a tapering cluster of small purplish flowers at the tip of the green or purple stem. Peppermint and spearmint are used interchangeably but spearmint is milder in flavor and temperature than peppermint and therefore more suited for children.
Mint, most commonly known as a digestive soother, helps to stimulate digestion following meals while simultaneously soothing away cramps and woes of the gastrointestinal tract. Turn to the mint family for those suffering from nausea including motion sickness, vomiting, gas, cramping, and diarrhea. The high amounts of volatile oils in mint are antimicrobial, which can help provide support during illness. As a nervine, mint helps to both relax away stress and tension while also rejuvenating the nervous system. Spearmint is tasty and easy to enjoy in a wide variety of foods and besides that, is nutritional as well with tons of minerals and vitamins. The dried herb is useful for making teas, infusions, baths, and syrups.
