St. John's Wort

Botanical Name: Hypericum perforatum
Family: Hypericaceae

Actions:
Anti-depressant
Wound-Healing
Anti-Inflammatory

St. John’s wort is native to Europe but has since been naturalized to other temperate climates around the world, with particular prominence in North America. The plant is a creeping perennial, producing star-shaped yellow flowers containing long, abundant stamens. St. John's wort is traditionally harvested near the beginning of the flowering cycle in late June. The flowers continue blooming throughout the summer and may be freely harvested throughout the season.

St. John's Wort helps promote a healthy mood and emotional balance. Most studies show that St. John's wort may help treat mild-to-moderate depression, and has fewer side effects than most other prescription antidepressants. But it interacts with a number of medications, so it should be taken only under the guidance of a health care provider. Because of its anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties, it can be applied externally to the skin with a poultice or compress to help soothe skin irritation and heal wounds and burns. Typical preparations include steeping as tea, oil infusions for topicals, and extracts. Call on St. John’s Wort when you need a sip of sunshine so you can find your light in the darkness.
