Dandelion is a treasured botanical with a long history of use in traditional herbal practices worldwide. This perennial herb has a sunny yellow flower head that is composed of hundreds of tiny flowers, deeply cut leaves that are quite similar to wild lettuce, and a thick taproot which is dark brown on the outside and white on the inside.. The flower heads close in the evening or during cloudy weather and open back up in the morning, much like its cousin calendula. It is native to most of Europe, Asia, and northern Africa, naturalized all over the world, and commonly found growing alongside roads and in lawns as a common weed. Dandelion will grow anywhere, but will produce more substantial roots in moist, rich, deep soil.

Dandelion was traditionally used in many systems of medicine to support digestive and gastrointestinal health. Additionally, dandelion was used to support liver health, healthy urinary function and has a mild diuretic action. Dandelion root helps to gently alleviate weakness in the liver and kidneys while providing nourishing vitamins and minerals thereby strengthening the whole body. Being high in vitamin A, potassium, calcium, magnesium, folic acid, iron, and vitamin C, dandelion is a super food extraordinaire! Dandelion root can be decocted as dandelion tea, added to herbal tea blends, made into dandelion extract, or infused into body care recipes. This modest yet powerful little plant is often accursed by modern gardeners. We would be wise to embrace it’s many virtues and cultivate rather than fight it’s existence in our world.
