Botanical Name: Echinacea purpurea
Echinacea was used at length by Native Americans and by traditional herbalists in the United States and Canada and eventually gained popularity in Europe in the 1900s. Echinacea purpurea is commonly referred to as purple coneflower after its brilliant violet petals and prominent spiny seed head. It is a big bushy shrub, growing 4-5 feet tall, with wider leaves.
Echinacea strengthens immune health and your body’s immune defenses to stay feeling healthy. Today, people use echinacea to shorten the duration of the common cold and flu and reduce symptoms, such as sore throat, cough, and fever. Many herbalists also recommend echinacea to help the body fight bacterial infections. Unlike antibiotics, which directly attack bacteria, Purple coneflower makes our own immune cells more efficient at attacking bacteria, viruses, and abnormal cells, including cancer cells. Echinacea stimulates new tissue growth for wound healing and reduces inflammation in arthritis and inflammatory skin condition. Echinacea herb is often combined with a variety of plants in botanical infusion blends. It can be steeped as echinacea tea, macerated in oils for topical applications, and tinctured.
